Shane Smith - Head Endurance Coach

I am a level 2 Endurance Coach and I have been at KTH since 2005 when my daughter started at the club as a 12 year old, I watched with interest all the training sessions and the Endurance Coach encouraged me to help out & I eventually took my coaching qualifications and I have never looked back. I coach 5-6 sessions a week and attend most races to watch my squad perform. We have achieved much success over the years, and this is all down to hard work, consistency and competing.

Athletes that I coach have achieved County, Regional, National & International success over the past few years, I have had 13 athletes make the English Schools T&F championships since 2012, and Recent success include English schools winners on Track & Cross Country, National success at Road Relays, and numerous vests won for England & GB where an athlete I coach has won International medals representing their Country. I have also regularly had many athletes ranked highly in the UK (top 10) including a UK Number 1.

At County & Regional level I have coached many medal winning performances with numerous county champions both on Track and cross Country. I am proud that over the past 10 years athletes I coach have set over 30 new club records, which for a club with 125 years of history is quite an achievement.

My coaching style is quite laid back, however I am passionate about endurance running and I try to help athletes of all abilities to train hard & enjoy success. I was part of the England Athletics National Coach mentoring scheme and I regularly attend coaching seminars and constantly conduct research to ensure I stay abreast of the latest developments in sports science and training methods.

I am also passionate about my athlete centered approach, I keep close contact with athletes & parents and monitor development, avoiding over training & over racing. I believe in a long and happy career in athletics and do not subscribe to the short term success at any cost approach. I believe any athlete irrespective of their ability can succeed if they work hard and train consistently. I will always find time for an athlete who wants to improve and are prepared to work at it. I am delighted to have been recognised as Kettering coach of the year in 2012/ 2014 & 2018 at the Kettering sports Awards.
