An outstanding performance by Edward Cherry in the 800m was one of the highlights for Kettering Town Harriers in the first round of the UKA Young Athletes League at Milton Keynes.
He ran unchallenged in difficult conditions for a huge personal best of 2.12.0, which puts him into the top 30 of the UK rankings for Under 15 boys.
Edward’s was one of several excellent efforts by KTH athletes, as the club was narrowly beaten into third place by Leicester Coritanian and Grantham.
Niamh Bailey epitomised the team spirit of the Harriers youngsters as she interrupted her High Jump competition (which she won with 1.50m) to gain maximum points in the B 200m, the 300m (45.0) and the Under 17 girls 4x100m relay.
There were other winners throughout the age groups. Ethan Mehmet won a closely contested Under 13 Boys 100m in 15.0, whilst Alice Chapman took the sprint double in the Under 17 girls.
Under 17 Boy Matt Stewart won the 400m by a huge margin in a swift time of 55.4.
In the endurance events, Maisie Green and Gemma Vaughan took maximum points in the Under 13 Girls 1200m, Maisie’s 4.08.5 slotting her into the top 20 of the national rankings. Abby Coleman ran well to win the Under 15 girls 1500m in 5.23.6.
Kettering dominated the High Jump with Bradley Fox (Under 15 Boy, 1.55m), Daisy Gilbert (Under 15 Girl, 1.25m) and Sophia Smith (Under 13 Girl, 1.15m) all taking top spot.
On a day when thermal scarves and gloves were required, Harriers’ officials deserve a vote of thanks. So, well done to Izzy, Ashley, Jamie, Russell and Dick for their efforts, and to Sarah for taking on the sometimes thankless task of team manager.
And a final mention for Bradley and his face paints…..
