On a very blustery April Sunday more than 260 athletes attended the first open meeting of the season. A consistently strong wind made it a challenge for athletes, officials and spectators but there were still some very good performances to enjoy.
In a much anticipated 100m heat, Tom Carvell narrowly beat Ed Cherry in a close finish with Niamh Bailey in a close 5th place. Senior Peter Oliver from Dudley &Stourbridge recorded The fastest time of the day - 11.1 seconds before following up with a fine 22.6m in the 200m for a sprint double who beat home Ed & Tom. Jack Reed comfortably won his heat as did Sam Cooper in amongst the many heats.
Roman Watson-quilter from Wreake runners ran the fastest time of the day for the 600m -1.55.5 seconds, beating his brother Lucca into third place. In all there were 22 u11 athletes from local club Rugby & Northampton with both Mac Ryder and Kane Burgess both winning their heats.
In the fastest 800m heat, Matt Stewart beat home team mate Liam Kirk by a second running 2.07 in difficult conditions. In earlier heats, there were local wins for Emily Williams and Edward Cannell with Edward winning in v comfortable fashion.
In the field events, Patrick Jowett from Cleethorpes was very impressive in the high jump winning with 1.89m having been chased earlier in the event by a busy Bradley Fox who jumped 1.71m before then jumping 6.36m in the long jump. There were also good performances by Lorna Milne & Niamh Bailey in tricky headwinds.
In the throws, Elouise Meakins won the Javelin with a fine 43.43m in very trying conditions. There were also good performances by Annie Gilbert and Ellie Vernon/Francesca Garrott from Telford who made the best of difficult conditions.
The club would like to take this opportunity to thank all athletes, officials, helpers for their efforts on Sunday. The club recognises that Sunday didn’t go as smoothly as we had hoped and we are looking at ways to improve this for the August meeting (Sun 18th). We hope to see you then.
