East Midlands U23 Report

Handful of Harriers compete for the East Midlands Under 23 Team

Five Athletes were chosen to compete for the East Midlands U23 team at Loughborough University in a match against Loughborough University and Birmingham University on Wednesday 30th May. The athletes competing in the tough conditions were Bradley Fox (U17), Niamh Bailey (U20), Matthew Stewart (U20), Edward Cherry (U17) and Fran Ashworth (U17).
Bradley competed in the High Jump (1.65m) and Long Jump (6.00m) finishing second in both. Niamh ran a seasons best and club record in the 100m (12.53) narrowly missing out on English Schools Qualification by 0.03 and jumped 5.13 on the Long Jump finishing 3rd and 2nd in each event. Matthew ran the 800 and was just outside a sub 2 time again with 2.00.12 seconds finishing 7th in a high quality race. Another high quality race was the men’s 400m which featured Edward. The winner of the race was earlier attempting to achieve the Olympic Qualifying Standard in the 400m Hurdles. Edward ran a good time of 52.97 to finish 5th. Fran also ran a seasons best 2.21.42 in the womens 800m also finishing 5th.
All the athletes competing were very proud to be selected in the first place and should be very proud of their performances. This will give all the athletes, who are well under the age of 23, a great experience for what is to come for them if they stick with the sport. Well done to all.
