Fynn wins National level Triathlon!

Kettering’s 17 year old triathlete Fynn Batkin from Desborough won his first National level triathlon at the Junior Super Series race at Eton Dorney. The British Triathlon Super Series is contested over 5 rounds between May and September by the most talented young triathletes in Great Britain. The athletes have to qualify to race in the series during a performance assessment weekend in April. Fynn has raced at Youth level (15 – 16 age group) for the last 2 years with a best placed finish of 2nd.

In his first season at Junior level (17 –19), he was looking to back up a fine 4th place finish in the previous round at Leeds.

The race was run over the sprint distance of a 750m swim, 21km bike and 5km run. With the water temperature being over 20 degrees, it was to be a non-wetsuit swim. By his standards, Batkin had a disappointing swim in a time of 10 mins 08 secs leaving him in 19th place going into transition. A good transition was now required to make the all-important front bike pack. Fynn managed get into the front pack of 10 breaking away from the rest of the field over the 21km (30min 8 secs for the bike leg). The race would now come down to a running race between the front 10 athletes. Within the first kilometre Fynn found himself in a breakaway with two other athletes, pulling away from the rest. The race came down to a sprint finish with Fynn winning by the smallest of margins and recording a fine 15min 27sec for the 5km run and an overall time of 57mins 02 secs. Next up for Fynn is the chance to qualify to represent Great Britain at the Hetton triathlon in 2 weeks’ time.
