Indienne's GB Debut

Indienne King’s big day arrived and she put in a terrific performance making her Junior GB debut at the Loughborough international. Racing over 800m King was competing against some seasoned senior women, including former European Junior U20 Gold medallist Izzy Boffey (England) & European U20 silver medallist Amy Griffiths (Loughborough Students), so her performance to finish in 5th place in 2:11.8 and top U20 was highly credible especially with the difficult weather conditions.

The slightly delayed start added to the nerves for King, who got off to a terrific start to settle in bhind the chasing pack in what was almost an individual race for Boffey who had a pacemaker targeting a 2:00 clocking. The race went off at a very quick pace with Boffey locked onto the pacemaker and the chasing pack sitting back, despite this King split in 62 seconds but perhaps felt the effect of the fast opening down the back straight as she become slighltly detached from the main chasing pack. King rallied and managed to dig deep in the final 100m to take 5th spot from Nicole Montgomery with her trade mark fast finish.

Indienne King fantastic GB Juniors debut performance.

King who was naturally feeling nervous making her GB debut, and matters were made worse with parents and coaches being banned from trackside and from the warm up area with over-zealous security due to covid measures not helping her settle. Despite this this is a day she will remember, and donned in her full GB kit King looked every inch the up and coming GB athlete, and she cannot wait for an opportunity to represent her country again. Coach Shane Smith was delighted with her performance over the day “Indienne at just 16 years old was the youngest GB Junior in the team and I was hugely impressed with the way she handled the pressure, and despite the lack of any access for myself and her parents affecting her preparation for the race she put in a very strong performance”.

King now sets her targets on attaining the European U20 qualifying time (2:06), with some fast races in the pipeline and competing at the U20 European trial races at Bedford in June.

Well Done Indie, proudly representing KTH!
