Fine medal haul at British Masters for the Harriers

The British Masters championship was held in Derby on Saturday and the Harriers contingent of Vets performed brilliantly in winning 12 medals!

 

European Indoor Masters silver medallist David Locker was competing at this event for the first time and secure a double medal winning performance. Locker was competing in the classic MD combination of 1500m & 800m and secured a fine Silver in the 1500m in 4:23.45, just edged out for the Gold medal in a very close race with Jan Bailey who finished 0.07 sec ahead. Locker ensured he recovered and ready for his second race in the day this time winning a brilliant Gold medal. Locker controlled the race from the start, and was challenged by Mike Chambers with 250m to go, but didn’t panic, ensuring he had the legs to overhaul his competitor in the final straight to win by just under 0.5 sec in 2:04.58.

Dave Folgate secured a Gold medal in the M70 category for the triple jump with 9.02m, with Mike Herring also winning Gold in the M80 Pole vault with 1.41m, the first of his 5 medal haul, a fine Silver in the M80 Javelin with 11.71m and three Bronze medals in the M80 Discus (17.93m), M80 Shot (5.90m), M80 High Jump (0.95m).

 

The only woman in action was Margeret Barker who scooped 4 medals with a Bronze in the W70 long jump (1.74m) & the W70 Javelin (9.21m) with two Silvers in the W70 Shot (5.04m) & W70 Discus (12.95m).

M50 Tony James making good progress from the effects of long covid was just out of the medals in the 800m finishing in 4th place in 2:14.35.
