Mason Trophy success for KTH

A number of the KT Harriers competing at the County schools championships on Saturday at Corby were successful with qualification for the Mason Trophy help next Saturday at Birmingham Alexander stadium.

Middle Distance - A total of 5 athletes secured selection with 4 competing over 800m underlining the strength of the squad at this distance, with the other success coming with intermediate boys over 3km.

Jack Hope was first to qualify with an easy victory in the Intermediate Boys 3k, Jack was untroubled by the only other competitor Jack Murphy and ran a strong front running race to record 9.37.9, jack now looks forward to the higher quality race at the Mason Trophy to try and clock a faster time nearer to 9:00.

Beth Gordon (Junior Girls) was first of the 800m specialists in action and after a tactical opening lap where she decided to sit in, main rival Ruby Goodall kicked with 200m to go catching Beth slightly unawares, but she held of the challenge of 3rd position comfortably to finish 2nd in 2:30.8. Hannah Whinstone & Priscilla Wilson were also competing and they finished in 6th & 7th respectively with 2:39.2/ 2:40.9

In the Junior Boys race, Ethan Mehmet ran a superbly controlled front running race to win comfortably in 2:15 and again will be looking for sterner competition at the Mason Trophy for a faster time.

Intermediate girls 800m specialist Fran Ashworth & Jess Gordon were going head to head again, and after a comfortable opening lap from Katie Clubb, where both were willing to sit in tactically, Jess decided to stretch the pace on the back straight, Fran decided to sit on her shoulder throughout and then out kicked her in the home straight to win in 2:21.8 and take revenge for the recent defeat at the county championships. Jess finished strongly in second with 2:23.5 to qualify. Both girls are agonising close to the English Schools qualification mark of 2:18 this year and will be looking for a midweek race to try and secure a qualification time before the Mason trophy.

Throws - Other KTH athletes qualifying for the Mason Trophy were the Gilbert sisters Daisy (Intermediate girls 1st for Hammer & Shot) and Annie (Junior girls 1st for discus) and Harriet Sumnall with 2nd position in the intermediate girls discus.

Also running in the Intermediate boys 1500m were Edward Cannell who set a new PB for 4th with 4:53.5, and Matt Brookes 5th with 4:58.2.
