Midland Vets League - Kettering Match Report

The second of the Veterans fixture was held at Kettering on a damp evening.   Kettering were the hosts assisted on the day by Harborough AC who co-ordinated the results.  At the time of writing this report the W40 discus results are missing and therefore there could be some changes to the results but unlikely to be of any overall significance.

The Men finished 3rd on the night and the Ladies finished in 5th of the 8 teams competing.

In the Mens team Steve Sinnott gained 2 new club records in the M50 category in 200m 26.2 for 1st and long jump 4.47.  Mike Herring M70 gained new club records in the 200m 43.6 and also finished 1st in the shot , in a club record of 6.02.  Trevor Herring lowered his own 2k walk record by over 1min 22 seconds while walking down an age group in 14.27.1 for 2nd - impressive given that Trev is 61 and competing in the M50 category.   Trev also competed in the M60 Javelin with 18.23.

Taking other victories on the night were Dave Folgate M60 triple jump 9.47 and Pete Mills high jump 1.60.  Pete also came 2nd in the Javelin with a throw of 36.51.  Dave also ran in the 200m and was ‘persuaded’ also to do the 3000m which was about 7 laps too many!!

Chris Johnson ran well in the M35 200m for 2nd in 26.2 just outside his own club record.  Matthew Watson also competed in the 200m M40 in 29.6 and the 800m in 2.49.   Sean Gallagher finished 2nd in the 2k walk in 13.22.5 in his own style of walking!  Sean also competed in the 800m in 2.50.7.  Andy Clawson narrowly missed a Club record in the 800m in 2.27.9 and will hope to achieve the record by the end of the season.

Ross Brown made a welcome return to the Veterans team running well in 10.55.3 in the 3000m.  Phil West had a rare run out for the Team also in 3000m for 3rd in 10.17.2.

Richard Coleman still nursing an injury threw the discus to 19.33.  Matthew Bell swapped his normal hammer for a shot put with a distance of 7.85.

In the Ladies team there were no victories but Elaine Fairbrother finished 2nd in the W35 3000m in 12.31.4 and also in triple jump with 6.58.  Elaine also ran in the 200m in 35.0 and 800m in 3.02 - a busy night for Elaine who was also in the Relay.  See relay details below.

Kathy Coleman competed in W50 200m 37.00, 2k walk in 14.09.3 but unfortunately was not able to compete in a slightly controversial high jump competition.   Paula Sinnott competed in W40 200m in 38.8 and 800m in 3.37.3.  Babs Poncia did the W50 800m in 3.18.2 and also ran down an age group in W40 3000m in 14.13.5.  Babs also made her debut in the long jump with 2.08.

Newcomer Jayne Devlin continued to impress with her willingness to compete in any event thrown her way.  Jayne gained a new club record in W70 200m in 53.4 and 3000m in 20.38.7 and also threw a Javelin to 8.62 also a new W70 record.

Christine Henshaw W60 joined the Team running well in the 200m in 66.3 having recently recovered from injury.

Lorna Barlow did shot with 5.40 and also threw a new pb in the discus where the results have gone missing!   Alison Moxey did the 2k walk and found herself impressively overtaking various people in the final 2 laps in 14.31.00.

The relays were interesting in two age groups of Mixed relay teams.  One Over 35 Team 4 x 400m (two females, 2 males) and one Over 50 Team.  The Over 35 Team of Ross Brown, Chris Johnson, Paul Sinnott and Elaine Fairbrother finished in 5.00.7.  The Over 50 Team of Steven Sinnott, Andy Clawson, Kathy Coleman and Babs Poncia finished in 5.15.5.

A successful and friendly night of athletics, thank you to the officials and volunteers who made this event possible.  The next vets league fixture is on 3rd July at Rugby.
